The lack of formal training medical students receive on cannabis

When it comes to cannabis, many patients are looking to their doctors for advice. But what if those doctors themselves don’t have the training they need to answer patients’ questions? A recent survey found that most medical students don’t get formal training on how to use cannabis for medical purposes. Survey results published in the journal Cureus show that few doctors do their own research on the issue.

Researchers with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looked at survey results and found that almost seven out of ten medical professionals supported the use of medical cannabis. Even though there is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to integrating cannabis education into medical curricula, the future looks promising. As more doctors learn about how cannabis can be used to treat health problems, they will be better able to talk to their patients about this potentially life-changing medicine.

Tips to help you have a more productive conversation with your doctor about medical cannabis

Be prepared

Before you even step into the doctor’s office, take some time to educate yourself about medical cannabis. Read up on the different strains and their effects, talk to other patients who have used medical cannabis, and make sure you have a clear idea of why you think it might be beneficial for you. This will not only help you communicate better with your doctor, but it will also show them that you’re serious about making an informed decision.

Be honest

It’s important that you be honest with your doctor about your symptoms and how they’re affecting your quality of life. This isn’t always easy, but it’s crucial in order for them to fully understand your situation and determine whether or not medical cannabis is right for you.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Your doctor should be open to answering any questions you have about medical cannabis. If they’re not, that’s a red flag. Make sure you understand everything they tell you before moving forward with treatment.
